(BATON ROUGE, La.)– Making this sandwich bread will become your weekly ritual. I’ve been making my own bread for a few months now after realizing just how many unnecessary ingredients go into store bought bread. While it doesn’t have a shelf life as long as store bought bread, it has under 10 ingredients, and costs half the price to make per loaf.
Ingredients:
1 cup warm water
1/4 cup 2% milk
1 yeast packet
2 tbsp sugar
1/4 cup butter (half a stick)
1 1/2 tsp salt
3 1/3 cup bread flour
Instructions:
Prepare your dough: mix yeast, sugar, salt, water, and milk. Cover and let rest for 5 minutes
Using a cheese grater, fold your butter in
Mix in flour to form dough, knead for 10 minutes
Allow to rise in lightly oiled bowl for 2 hours covered until it’s doubled in size
Once it’s doubled, push air out.
Roll your dough out with your rolling pin on a lightly floured surface
Roll into a log and place in your bread tin that is lined with parchment paper
Allow to rise covered again for 2 more hours until it’s risen over your bread tin
Preheat oven to 325 degrees and bake for 30 minutes
When finished, tap the top of your bread to ensure it sounds hollow
Cool before cutting
Store in a cool, dry place (in a bag is best).
