(NEW YORK) – New York City is taking major steps to reopen businesses one year after the COVID- 19 lockdown.

According to Johns Hopkins University, New York is reporting a weekly average of 7,400 COVID-19 cases daily. This is the state’s lowest average since the beginning of December.

As of today, 1,614,000 doses have been administered, with more on the way.

New York was one of the first cities to be hit hardest by the virus last year but has shown improvements over the past few weeks.

California native, Katherina Nguyen, recently left quarantine in San Francisco to house sit for a friend in New York City

“Essentially the fall was nice, I finally took a break from the wildfires and being indoors,” said Nguyen. “I went to New York and got to see what a reopened city was like.”

New York City is starting to reopen various indoor activities over the coming weeks.

Starting March 5, movie theaters will be allowed to reopen at 25% capacity. Assigned seats will be required and theaters cannot exceed 50 people per screen.

The announcement is welcome news for theater owners after ticket sales fell drastically last year due to the pandemic.

Indoor dining resumed this month at 35% capacity, along with allowing sports fans into sporting events. The city is working towards a 10% capacity inside stadiums and various arenas in the coming weeks.
