Lovers of gospel hymnals came together to listen to Black composers like, Hampton University Professor Omar Dickerson, who put their spin on traditional gospel music by giving it the African American experience. “Dr. Scott” as he’s known, hopes for more representation of Black people like this in the media. He donated money to support Black choirs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) through this event.

“I want people to know that Black also equates to excellence, and we can walk out in excellence, and walk up on stage in excellence no matter where we are.”

He says he aims to bring a sense of hope and joy amid a divisive climate and hopes to host more events like this to increase the representation of Black composers in the future.
