In a world where most of us carry an entire media universe in our pockets, it might be easy to assume that public libraries are losing their relevance. But inside the Los Angeles Public Library’s Westwood branch, the reality looks very different. Books still fill the shelves, but so do resources that many residents can’t get anywhere else — from free Wi-Fi and computer access to digital lending platforms and community programs.
Branch Librarian Jennifer Noble has witnessed the shift firsthand. While the library remains a space for reading, she says its modern role extends far beyond the traditional stacks. Today’s branches act as community hubs where people can gather, learn, and access trustworthy information without cost or commercial pressure.

“We’re a place where you can trust what you’re checking out,” Noble said. “Every book is vetted by people who care deeply about these subjects. And the vast majority of peer-reviewed information online is behind paywalls — libraries help you get past those paywalls.”
That access matters for patrons like Queen Mayes, who visits the branch to check email, print materials, and use the Libby app to borrow audiobooks. Without a computer at home, the library provides her essential digital tools — and some joy. “I also run a little fan club for my cat,” she says. “This is a great place to print coloring pages for the kids who come by to visit her.”

Patron Glenda Coppola stopped in on a whim during errands but stayed for the atmosphere. “There’s just nothing like a library,” she says. “It’s a world, it’s an adventure… and it lets you be still for a moment.”
The Los Angeles Public Library Westwood branch is balancing tradition with transformation — offering books, connection, and digital access to the community it serves.
