Most residents of San Antonio, Texas, are used to not having to wear a coat—even during the Christmas season. Temperatures remain in the low eighties for the majority of the month.

However, even though it stays warm throughout December, the city still knows how to create a winter ambiance. One of the most iconic ways it’s achieved is through the downtown area’s famous holiday lights. Located along the River Walk, about 200,000 lights drape from the trees, offering a beautiful view for those on a boat tour or simply walking the corridor.

For twenty-four-year-old local Ethan Rodriguez, it’s more than just a fun activity. It’s a valued tradition.

“When I was younger, we used to always jump in the boats, me and my family, we’d go up and down and look at all the beautiful lights, and the guy on the boat was always so funny,” Rodriguez said. “He’d make the greatest jokes and kind of fill us in and all of the information here in San Antonio, which, as a longtime resident, I didn’t even know. I’ve been here my whole life, and every time I get on the boat I learn something new.”

This year, the lights turned on on November 28, the day of the city’s Ford Holiday River parade. There, visitors also enjoyed music performances, elaborately decorated floats, and hot chocolate.

Despite the heavy traffic that comes with the season, Go Rio boat cruises are a hit while the area is illuminated. Folks board the crafts for narrated tours, which teach passengers about the city.

The lights shine every day until January 11, 2026.
