On Dec. 8, 2025, approximately 100 people attended the launch of the second Hugs Cafe location near downtown Dallas. Founders Ruth and Chris Thompson said guests may arrive for the mission but return for the food, which includes but is not limited to sandwiches, soups, and salads. The mission is to employ adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities by providing training and job opportunities.
Building on their experience at the original McKinney cafe, founded in 2015, as well as Hugs Greenhouse, Hugs Training Academy, and catering services, the founders described the new restaurant as a place where people can expect to feel a sense of belonging and happiness, and where a community that is often underestimated is visibly contributing and valued. Employees echoed that vision as they prepared for opening day. Shannon, a hostess, recalled an atmosphere filled with cheers and clapping ahead of the ribbon-cutting and called it very fun, while fellow hostess Natalie emphasized the importance of having a stable job and looked forward to being the best hostess she can be. Her perspective highlights how employment can be especially impactful for people who are neurodivergent.
Other employees shared similar enthusiasm. For Kayun, a waitress, the grand opening marked both her first day at Hugs Cafe and her first job, and she said she was excited to serve all the beautiful customers. Micah, a dining room attendant, also expressed excitement about being hired, while Simone, a counter attendant, eagerly rang up orders utilizing her customer service skillset. Ruth and Chris Thompson noted the significance of the new cafe but suggested it likely will not be their last, saying they want to continue to grow with demand under the belief that everyone wants to be loved and be part of a community. The opening represents a broader effort to connect food service, meaningful employment, and a deeper sense of belonging.
