From Super Mario to Donkey Kong, gamers have been pushing themselves to reach the highest ranking on leaderboards for classic games. Today many more games have become the target for gamers of a different breed–speedrunners, whose main goal is to complete a given title as fast as possible.

The artform has its roots in the early 1990s with the computer game Doom, and since then Speedrunning has taken on an almost new form. The objective remains the same–beat a game and do it fast.

But with the world of content creation helping bolster optimized strategies, anyone can get in on the action now, making the climb to the top that much more challenging.

@nyu_ajo When it comes to completing #videogames, no one is faster than a #speedrunner. At least not until other speedrunners get involved and try to break a record or two in the process. This subculture in the world of video games is committed to beating any and all titles with as many optimal strategies as possible. From #Zelda to #DonkeyKong, these gamers just want to go REALLY fast. #videogames ♬ original sound – American Journalism Online
