(METUCHEN) – In the heart of Metuchen, NJ, where Thomas Mundy Peterson—America’s first Black voter—was born, another mission is in motion. Kyle Little, the owner of Isolation Fitness and a professor at Kean University, is planning to enter the political arena as a candidate for New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District. This move merges his passions for health, education, and community service.

With a focus on high-energy workouts and client wellness, Little wants Isolation Fitness to be known as “the top fitness center in the area” that builds more than muscle—connection and purpose.

Isolation Fitness’ Metuchen and Edison locations regularly host charity events like a “Zumba for Heart Health” fundraiser, donating half the proceeds to the American Heart Association, and an annual dog hike that supports local charities.

But Little doesn’t want to stop at just charitable efforts. He’s gearing up to make a run for public office—at a time when Black representation in local politics continues to lag.

As a healthcare professional, Little is vocal about protecting programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. “I believe every person deserves healthcare.”

As a Black member of the LGBTQ+ community, married to a White man, Little said, “I constantly see our rights being threatened or taken away. But I’m a fighter.”

Little’s fighting spirit inspired Demarcus Shephard, a former intern, to pursue a career as a personal trainer. Shephard said Little became a role model to him.

“He’s an African American man like myself, and his goals pushed me to dream bigger,” Shephard said. He hopes Little continues to be “brave” while pursuing his political ambitions.

For Shephard, having visible Black leaders helped him envision his own success. Similarly, Little is stepping into a legacy shaped by Black trailblazers from New Jersey, including Thomas Mundy Peterson and Senator Cory Booker, who led a record-breaking 25-hour Senate speech.

Despite concerns about the risks to his family’s safety amid political tensions, Little believes the stakes are too high not to pursue public service. “My passion drives me,” he said, gazing at a painting in his studio that reads, “If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.”

From Radio Waves to Photo Frames: A Tribute to the Godfather of Black Radio

It was the early 1980s. On any given Sunday, over the loud horns and hustling New Yorkers, you would hear Hal Jackson hosting the top-rated “Sunday Classics” on 107.5 WBLS, playing records by everyone from Prince to Michael Jackson, and Whitney Houston at a time when Black artists weren’t played on the radio as much. Each week, whenever Hal gave away CDs or concert tickets on air, his wife of then-15 years, Debi B, would be on phone duty, writing down winners’ names on a sheet of paper and handing it to Hal to announce. One day, he asked her to make the announcement.
